Indian Air Force history is often easier to understand when change can be seen. This page brings together animated timelines, maps, charts and other data-led visualisations created from archival research. Each exhibit includes its assumptions and methodology so that the evidence behind the visual remains visible.
IAF Fighter Squadron Strength, 1933–2026
An animated year-by-year account of how the Indian Air Force’s fighter force grew, changed aircraft and eventually contracted from its historical peak.
49-second animated visualisation. Use the player controls to pause at any year.
What the visualisation shows
The headline squadron count tells only part of the story. This animation also follows the changing aircraft mix, the periods of rapid expansion, and the induction and retirement decisions that shaped the force at each stage.
The broad journey
- From a single squadron to rapid wartime expansion.
- Post-Independence rebuilding, followed by accelerated expansion after 1962.
- A broader aircraft mix and the climb to the historical peak of 42 squadrons.
- Newer aircraft improve capability, but retirements outpace induction and the overall number declines.
Sources, definitions and methodology
Research and visualisation: Anchit Gupta, IAFHistory.in.
Version: July 2026.
- Year-only labels are year-end counts unless a specific date is shown.
- Only regular fighter squadrons are counted; temporary wartime squadrons are excluded.
- Where a squadron’s formation slightly predates aircraft induction, the count begins from the aircraft induction date.
The purpose of the visualisation is to show the changing structure and composition of the fighter force over time. As additional records are identified, the underlying dataset and visual may be revised.
